Youngsters get creative for Fairtrade

Youngsters across Trafford have been awarded for their creativity as part of a Fairtrade competition for schools.
Pupils were invited, by the Fairtrade in Trafford steering group, to submit a poem, short story, picture or drawings on Fairtrade. Each participating school had an overall winner who received a book token from the Fairtrade group, and due to the outstanding quality of entries there were a number of runners up who all received recycled promotional items donated by Trafford's Recycling Officer.
The theme was 'Monkeying around for Fairtrade' and the two overall winners also received a cuddly monkey supplied by Sainsbury's in Altrincham. 10 year old Hannah Tomkinson from Oldfield Brow Primary School told the life story of a banana, with an exciting story of its adventure which caught the attention of the judges. Kian Wilson, aged 9, from St Margaret Ward Primary School wrote a poem about whether we think about the impact that the Fairtrade logo has on the communities that depend on it.
Executive Councillor John Reilly said: "By getting children involved in learning more about Fairtrade in interesting and fun ways we are educating the next generation. There is a lot of great work going on around Trafford to support Fairtrade and I am delighted that our schools are so keen to get involved and would like to congratulate all the youngsters on their excellent and artistic efforts."
Many schools in Trafford are working towards being accredited with the Fairtrade School Status. St Margaret Ward Primary School along with the Borough of Trafford have both recently had their renewal applications granted from the Fairtrade Foundation, and will continue to promote the value of choosing products with the Fairtrade logo.
